Course details

Our advanced scrambling course is for the competent hillwalker who has done some Grade I scrambles. Once completed, you will have the tools to take on the more advanced scrambles (Grades II & III) and support others on the journey.

On the Advanced Scrambling Course, we will cover the following areas:

  • Using different forms of protection
  • The use of a rope
  • Rope management
  • Efficient movement
  • Developing your confidence with the rope
  • Belaying methods
  • Looking after yourself and others
  • Planning a journey
  • Weather knowledge and forecasting
  • Route-finding and route-selection

We will be looking at building up your confidence on grade II and III scrambling terrain. Specifically looking at route finding, gear placement, and rope management.  And how to keep each other safe.  It may be a lot to take in on the course, and suggest 4 days.  But if you are a fast learner, a 2 day course will be sufficient. Some of the infamous scrambles we may be attempting on the advanced scrambling course would be the infamous Idwal Staircase, Parsons Arete, or Pinnacle Ridge.

Duration

The course is 2 or 4 days long, and is run in North Wales or the Lake District. Our client-to-instructor ratio does not exceed 2:1, so that we can give you our fullest attention.

All of our courses are tailored to suit your availability and experience, taking into account any individual needs and fitness levels.

Course Location

Kit

We will discuss any specific kit requirements with you when you make a booking.

Minimum Requirements

You will need to have completed some Grade I scrambles, basic map-reading skills would be useful, but are not essential. A reasonable degree of fitness is expected, but rest assured this is a course in scrambling, not fell-running!

TYPICAL ADVANCED SCRAMBLING COURSE LAYOUT

Each day of our advanced scrambling course we would introduce the topic of weather, and ability, and how this would affect venue selection.

Day 1

We will introduce the use of a map and compass, and what sometimes can be complicated, route finding.  We will be scrambling up grade II & III terrain, introducing gear placement, belaying and building anchors.

Day 2

We will be using the skills learnt on day one, and do lots more scrambling over grade II & III terrain.  Looking at efficient movement, rope management, and route finding.

If you are unsure that the advanced scrambling course is suitable for you, please do not hesitate to contact us on info@riseandsummit.co.uk or call us on 07775 853 348, and we would be happy to help.
