Our 2-day learn to lead climb course (Trad climbing) is for the competent indoor or sport climber who is looking to take his/her skills outside. By the end of the course, you will have the tools to lead climb outside and take it to places all over the UK and abroad.

On the Learn to Lead Climb Course, we will cover the following areas:

  • Equipment selection
  • Safety
  • Protection (selection, placements, and maintenance)
  • Rope Management
  • Building and equalising anchors
  • Abseiling
  • Route choice and guidebooks
  • Climbing calls and communication
  • And of course, lots of climbing

Our experienced instructors will choose the right location as a learning environment, with the right amount of challenge.  We generally climb on single pitch crags for this course.

The learn to lead climb course is 2 days long, and is run in the Wye Valley or Forest of Dean (Gloucestershire, Monmouthshire), Avon Gorge (Bristol, Somerset), or The Peak District. The client-to-instructor ratio does not exceed 3:1, but is usually 2:1 to ensure that we can give you our fullest attention.

All of our courses are tailored to suit your availability and experience, taking into account any individual needs and fitness levels.

Each day of our learn to lead climb course we would introduce the topic of weather, and ability, and how this would affect venue selection.

Day 1

You will learn everything you need to learn to trad climb.  This day tends to be packed with lots of information, and may sometimes feel overwhelming.  We will look at equipment selection, route selection, guidebooks, climbing calls and communication.  We will spend most of our time looking at gear placements, building anchors, equalising anchors, and rope management.

Day 2

Here we get you to put all you have seen on the previous day into practice.  If you feel confident in the skills you have learnt we will get you to lead climb your first trad route. We will also be doing some abseiling.

If you are unsure whether the learn to lead climb course is suitable for you, please do not hesitate to contact us on info@riseandsummit.co.ukor call us on 07775 853 348, and we would be happy to help.
