Course content

Our 2-day learn to sport climb course is for the competent indoor climber who is looking to take his/her skills outside. By the end of the course, you will have the tools to lead climb inside/outside on sport climbing routes.  And you will be able to take it anywhere in the world.

 

On the Learn to Sport Climb Course, we will cover the following areas:

  • Equipment selection
  • Safety
  • Protection (selection and maintenance)
  • Dynamic belaying
  • Rope Management
  • Retrieval of equipment from a route
  • Abseiling and lowering
  • Route choice and guidebooks
  • Climbing calls and communication
  • And of course, lots of climbing

 

Our experienced instructors will choose the right location as a learning environment, with the right amount of challenge.  We generally climb on single pitch crags for this course.

Duration

The learn to sport climb course is 2 days long, and is run in the Wye Valley or Forest of Dean (Gloucestershire, Monmouthshire), Avon Gorge (Bristol, Somerset), or South Wales. The client-to-instructor ratio does not exceed 4:1, to ensure that we can give you our fullest attention.

All of our courses are tailored to suit your availability and experience, taking into account any individual needs and fitness levels.

Minimum Requirements

Our learn to sport climb course is suitable for anyone that can top rope climb to level 5a indoors. If in doubt about whether the course is suitable for you, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

TYPICAL LEARN TO SPORT CLIMB COURSE LAYOUT

Each day of the course we would introduce the topic of weather, and ability, and how this would affect venue selection.

Day 1

You will learn everything you need, to sport lead climb.  We will look at equipment selection, route selection, guidebooks, climbing calls and communication, lead climbing belaying, rope management, and lowering.

 

Day 2

Here we get you to put all you have seen on the previous day into practice.  Plus we will also introduce dynamic belaying, look at falling, and retrieval of the equipment on the route.  If you feel confident in the skills you have learnt we will get you to lead climb your first sport route.  And of course, we will be doing lots of climbing.
