TYPICAL BIG WALL CLIMBING COURSE LAYOUT

The content of our big wall climbing course will be as follows:

DAY 1

Here we introduce the system of aid climbing.  We will mainly look at clean aid climbing, and jumaring a rope as a second.  Furthermore, you will learn how to fix the ropes, and what issues you may come across.

DAY 2

As well as covering the previous day’s systems.  We will introduce marginal, and hammered aid climbing techniques.  As well as hauling and the lowering of the haul bags.  In addition, we will cover the different systems of hauling, and when to use them.

DAY 3

Finally, here we will put all we have learnt into practice. From aid climbing, jumaring, hauling, and marginal gear.  We will also be setting up the portaledge, and breaking it down.  As if you were attempting a big wall for real.

The course content and location tend to be dictated to us by the weather, so the big wall climbing course layout can change.

COURSE DETAILS

Our 3-day big wall climbing course will give you everything you need to attempt big wall climbs. We will be looking at how to prepare for the climb, how to tackle the climb itself, and how to manage your equipment during the climb. Also, the course covers clean and hammered aid techniques, and the use of portaledges (hanging tent systems).

On the Big Wall Climbing Course, we will cover the following areas:

  • The aid system and how it works
  • Clean aid climbing
  • Hammered aid climbing
  • Marginal gear placements
  • Hauling
  • Jumaring
  • Fixing ropes
  • Rope care
  • Other aid climbing systems
  • Stance and rope management
  • Setting up a portaledge, and taking it down

If you have always wanted to go and climb a big wall, but unsure where to start.  Aid climbing is a specific technique that provides climbers with the ability to get up routes that may be too hard to free climb.  This is the perfect place to learn.  On the big wall climbing course, we will look at different aid climbing systems, i.e. clean aid climbing and hammered aid climbing.  Also, we will look at marginal placements, i.e. skyhooks, cam hooks, beaks and RURP’s, this is the exciting part.  It always feels a little disconcerting what you can actually hang on, but impressive at the same time.

On the big wall climbing course, we will cover jumaring up a rope.  Which is the more efficient way of a second following a route.  And lastly, hauling and lowering of haul bags.  How to release the bags, what systems to use, and what to do when they get stuck. Read our article on aid climbing for further information and what you may need to learn before attempting your own big wall adventure.

Soon you will be tackling your own big wall!
